Cox: Aug typical new payment $770; financing costs edging up. Competing (not exclusive) auto seller enquiries still useful.
Cox Automotive’s Sept. 21 Auto Market Weekly Summary highlights August new-vehicle affordability from the Cox Automotive/Moody’s Analytics Vehicle Affordability Index: typical payment $770 (+0.5% MoM; +2.6% YoY), median income weeks 35.5 (from 35.4 in July; 35.9 a year earlier), average transaction price up 0.5% MoM, incentives down 0.6% MoM and 7.3% YoY. New-vehicle loan rates rose about 20 basis points over the past two months; used rates about 10.
When retail payments climb and financing costs edge higher, trade and purchase decisions get stickier. Shoppers pause. Sellers still call desks—but they often want more than one pencil before they commit.
A tighter affordability backdrop does not invent a magic valuation for every trade. It does increase the value of orderly seller conversations: know the payoff, inspect the unit, and let multiple dealers compete when the product is built that way. National payment averages are not a substitute for a local appraisal.
On TXLeadForge, automotive leads are structured around competing offers for vehicle sellers. That is not an exclusive-to-one-dealer product. Roofing and real-estate leads on the platform are exclusive; do not assume other products share that model without confirmation.
Invalid-lead questions are handled case by case—this post does not invent refund, credit, or replacement policies.
Takeaway: August’s affordability squeeze is a reminder that seller enquiries still reward competition at the desk—not a single automatic valuation.
